Wife of Indiana Republican Dies From Injuries Suffered In Car Crash

The wife of Indiana Rep. Jim Baird has died weeks after suffering severe injuries in a January hit-and-run crash.

Danise Baird passed away early Sunday morning from complications related to the injuries she sustained in the accident, according to a statement from the congressman’s office. She had been hospitalized after the crash and was recovering from more than a dozen fractures.

In a statement released Sunday, Baird’s office described her as the heart of the family and asked for prayers during a difficult time.

“Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service,” the statement read. “A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”

Jim and Danise Baird had been married for nearly six decades and were known as high school sweethearts. Together they raised three children and built a life rooted in their shared commitment to family and public service.

The couple was involved in a serious car crash on Jan. 5 while returning to Washington, D.C. At the time, President Donald Trump said both were expected to recover, although the accident had been described as “pretty bad.”

Both Jim and Danise Baird were hospitalized following the crash. The 80-year-old congressman was released the following day, Jan. 6, but had to wear a neck brace for several weeks as he recovered from his injuries.

Danise Baird suffered far more extensive injuries, including 15 fractures and breaks throughout her body. She remained hospitalized longer and was eventually discharged on Jan. 12, according to an update shared by the couple’s son, Beau Baird, on Facebook.

In the weeks that followed, Beau Baird occasionally shared updates on his mother’s recovery. In a Feb. 1 post, he wrote that she had taken her “first assisted steps” since the crash, a milestone that gave the family hope as she faced a long recovery process.

At the time, he acknowledged that progress would take time and that the family knew “there’s still a road ahead.” He also noted that his mother was a private person, which is why he had largely focused his updates on his father’s condition.

Beau Baird later shared a brief post on Sunday marking the exact moment of his mother’s passing, writing simply “3/1/26 6:31:10 am,” shortly before the official confirmation from his father’s congressional office.

News of Danise Baird’s death prompted condolences from several members of Congress and political leaders.

Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York wrote that Danise was frequently by her husband’s side during his work in Washington. “Jim’s wife Danise was often by his side as he worked so hard in Congress on behalf of his constituents,” Stefanik said in a message posted on X. “They are salt of the earth people and Jim and his family have sacrificed so much for our country.”

Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon also expressed sympathy for the Baird family, praising the couple’s long marriage and saying he would keep the congressman in his prayers.

Indiana State Rep. Jake Teshka likewise offered support, asking others to pray for Jim Baird, Beau Baird, and their extended family as they cope with the loss.

Danise Baird’s death marks a tragic end to what had initially appeared to be a hopeful recovery following the January crash, leaving the congressman and his family mourning the loss of a wife, mother, and longtime partner.
