The Republican-controlled House of Representatives recently passed legislation requiring the federal government to deport undocumented immigrants who assault police officers, a measure that faced significant opposition from most Democrats.
The bill passed by a vote of 265 to 148, with 54 Democrats joining Republicans in support. The legislation, titled the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, was introduced by Representative Jeff Van Drew, a Republican from New Jersey.
Van Drew argued that individuals who attack law enforcement officers should not be allowed to remain in the United States. According to him, such actions demonstrate a lack of respect for the rule of law and the country’s institutions.
“There is no reason that an illegal alien who attacks our law enforcement should remain in our country,” Van Drew said. “That shows zero respect for our rule of law or our institutions, and they will not be positive contributors to society.”
Under the proposed law, undocumented immigrants accused of assaulting a police officer would be detained by federal authorities until they are deported to their home countries. The bill would also establish a new category of immigration inadmissibility specifically targeting migrants accused of attacking law enforcement personnel.
Republican leaders praised the passage of the bill. Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the House Majority Whip, criticized Democrats who opposed the measure.
“House Democrats just voted to protect violent, illegal immigrants over our brave law enforcement officers,” Emmer said following the vote.
The debate over immigration enforcement comes as broader political tensions continue to shape the national conversation, particularly regarding economic policy and voter sentiment.
At the same time, recent polling data has highlighted a political challenge for Democrats when it comes to public confidence in economic leadership. A poll released by CNN showed Republicans maintaining a noticeable advantage over Democrats on economic issues, surprising some analysts.
CNN data analyst Harry Enten expressed surprise while discussing the results with anchor Kate Bolduan. He noted that many observers expected Democrats to hold a stronger position on the economy after months of criticism directed at former President Donald Trump’s economic policies, including tariffs.
“You would think that after the first several months of the Trump presidency that Democrats would have a huge lead on the economy,” Enten said during the segment. “But that’s not what the data shows.”
According to the poll, when Americans were asked which political party best represents their views on the economy, Republicans held an eight-point advantage. In November 2023, Republicans led by 11 points, meaning the gap has remained relatively consistent.
Enten also pointed to additional polling from Reuters/Ipsos, which showed similar results. In May 2024, just before Trump was reelected, Republicans held a nine-point advantage on which party voters believed had the better economic plan.
By May 2025, that lead had increased to 12 points, suggesting that Republican messaging on economic policy continues to resonate with many voters despite ongoing debates over tariffs, stock market volatility, and broader economic uncertainty.
Enten said the results highlight a significant political challenge for Democrats.
“The Republicans still have the upper hand on the most important issue of the day,” he explained, noting that economic concerns often play a major role in shaping voter decisions.
He added that Republicans also appear to maintain strong support among many middle-class voters, which could influence future elections as economic debates continue to dominate the political landscape.
