ual Crises: US Supreme Court Curbs California’s Green Mandates Amid Escalating Persian Gulf Tensions
The U.S. Supreme Court delivered a significant blow to California’s aggressive climate agenda, ruling 7-2 to allow energy producers to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The lawsuit targets California’s extreme green energy mandates, including the requirement for electric vehicles (EVs) to dominate the market by 2035, a core part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s push for “carbon neutrality.” Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for the majority, stated that the government cannot evade lawsuits by claiming regulated industries are “unaffected bystanders,” and highlighted the EPA’s shifting legal arguments regarding Clean Air Act authorization for California’s greenhouse gas regulations.

This ruling aligns with President Donald Trump’s recent actions to dismantle key green policies. EPA head Lee Zeldin announced Trump’s plan for “the largest act of deregulation in the history of the United States,” specifically targeting the 2009 Endangerment Finding. Initiated under President Barack Obama, this finding classified greenhouse gases as a public health danger, leading to extensive regulations despite the Clean Air Act not originally addressing global warming. The Endangerment Finding heavily influenced Biden administration mandates for near-total EV adoption by 2032, a costly measure not subject to public vote, with Trump’s team asserting its repeal would save thousands per car.

Concurrently, reports from Iranian television and international news agencies detail a dangerous escalation in the Persian Gulf, with Iran reportedly launching attacks on US bases. Powerful explosions were reported in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), with the Al Dhafra air base allegedly hit by ballistic missiles. Smoke was observed in Manama, Bahrain, near a U.S. Fifth Fleet base. Qatar’s Interior Ministry called for shelter-in-place after a Patriot missile system reportedly intercepted a missile targeting Al Udeid airbase, while Qatar and the UAE closed their airspace. Explosions were also heard in Kuwait, as authorities urged citizens to stay home amidst evolving tensions.
