Dr. James Dobson, an influential psychologist, evangelical leader, and one-time adviser to Donald Trump, has died at the age of 89. Over a career spanning more than half a century, Dobson became one of the most recognizable figures in American evangelical Christianity, shaping conversations about faith, family relationships, and social values.
Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Dobson built his reputation through his work in psychology and his ability to communicate complex family and parenting issues to broad audiences. Early in his career he worked as a clinical psychologist, but he soon expanded his focus beyond academic and therapeutic settings. Through media appearances, public speaking, and widely read books, Dobson began reaching millions of families who were looking for guidance on marriage, parenting, and faith.
His message emphasized the importance of strong families, committed marriages, and attentive parenting as the foundation of a healthy society. These ideas resonated strongly with evangelical audiences across the United States, helping Dobson become one of the most prominent voices in the movement during the late 20th century. His books and broadcasts encouraged parents to take an active role in raising children with moral and spiritual guidance, themes that became central to his public work.
In the mid-1970s, Dobson founded Focus on the Family in California. The ministry was created to provide resources and support for families while also engaging with cultural and social issues affecting them. Under Dobson’s leadership, the organization expanded rapidly and developed into one of the most influential evangelical institutions in the country.
By the 1980s and 1990s, Dobson’s daily radio program had become one of the most widely distributed Christian broadcasts worldwide. The show aired on more than 4,000 radio stations throughout North America and was translated into 27 languages. Its reach eventually extended to listeners in more than 160 countries, allowing Dobson’s views on parenting, marriage, and Christian faith to influence audiences far beyond the United States.
Dobson’s impact was widely acknowledged by leaders within conservative and religious communities. Gary Bauer described him as a “pioneer” whose beliefs helped guide how generations of families approached questions of faith and culture. Bauer and others credited Dobson with offering encouragement and direction to parents navigating social change.
In 1991, Focus on the Family moved its headquarters to Colorado Springs, where it remains based today. From there, the organization continued expanding its media presence, educational programs, and advocacy efforts. Through his leadership, Dobson helped shape evangelical engagement with issues such as marriage, parenting, religious liberty, and pro-life advocacy, leaving a lasting imprint on both religious and cultural discussions in the United States.
