😢🥲Wife of Indiana Republican Dies From Injuries Suffered In Car Crash

Danise Baird, the wife of Indiana Congressman Jim Baird, died early Sunday morning from complications related to severe injuries she suffered in a hit-and-run crash earlier this year. She had spent the weeks since the accident recovering from more than a dozen fractures sustained during the collision.

The crash took place on January 5 as the congressman and his wife were traveling back to Washington, D.C. Both were hospitalized after what officials described at the time as a serious accident. Early reports following the crash indicated that, although their injuries were significant, the couple was expected to recover.

The incident drew national attention shortly afterward. Ahead of a House Republican policy retreat the next day, former President Donald Trump referenced the accident, describing it as a “pretty bad” crash while expressing hope that the couple would ultimately be “going to be okay.”

Despite those initial expectations, Danise Baird continued to face significant medical challenges stemming from the accident. On Sunday morning, Congressman Baird’s office confirmed that she had died from complications related to her injuries. The statement paid tribute to her life and the decades she spent alongside her husband.

“Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service,” the statement said. “A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”

According to the congressman’s official biography, Jim and Danise Baird were high school sweethearts. Over nearly six decades of marriage, they raised three children and maintained strong ties to their community while Baird pursued a career in public service.

After the January crash, both Jim and Danise Baird were taken to the hospital for treatment. The congressman, who is 80 years old, was discharged on January 6. Although he was able to return home quickly, he was required to wear a neck brace for several weeks as he recovered from his injuries.

Danise Baird’s injuries were far more extensive. She suffered 15 fractures and breaks during the accident, which required a longer hospital stay. She remained hospitalized until January 12 before finally being discharged, according to updates shared by the couple’s son, Beau Baird.

Beau Baird, who later succeeded his father in the Indiana State Legislature when Jim Baird was elected to Congress, had periodically provided updates about his parents’ recovery in the weeks following the crash. In a February 1 social media post, he shared that his mother had taken her “first assisted steps” since the accident. At the time, he expressed cautious optimism while acknowledging that her recovery would likely be a long process.

He also explained that many of his public updates had focused on his father because his mother preferred to keep her medical situation private while she continued to heal.

On Sunday morning, Beau posted a brief message marking the exact moment of her passing—“3/1/26 6:31:10 am.” The message appeared shortly before Congressman Baird’s office officially confirmed her death.

Danise Baird’s passing brings a tragic conclusion to what had initially appeared to be a hopeful recovery after the devastating January crash. Her death leaves behind a grieving family and ends a nearly six-decade partnership that had long been central to the congressman’s life and career.
