In recent weeks, the United States has significantly expanded its military presence near Iran as President Donald Trump considers possible military action. Trump described the buildup as an “armada,” though administration officials have not publicly clarified specific operational goals. The deployment follows previous coordinated U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and reflects heightened tensions in the region.
At the center of the naval expansion is the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by three guided-missile warships equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles. These vessels also carry advanced air defense systems to protect the carrier strike group. Aircraft aboard the Lincoln, including F-35 stealth fighters and F/A-18 attack jets, are positioned within operational range of potential targets inside Iran. In addition, a second carrier strike group led by the USS Gerald R. Ford—the Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier—has been deployed to the region, along with three destroyers. With additional destroyers sent to the Northern Arabian Sea and others en route, the total number of U.S. destroyers in the broader region has reportedly reached 13.
On land, Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in eastern Jordan has become a key hub for U.S. air operations. Between mid-January and mid-February, two waves of attack aircraft increased the total stationed there to more than 60. Four electronic warfare aircraft capable of jamming radar and communications systems were also deployed, along with at least five MQ-9 Reaper drones for surveillance and strike missions. On February 24, the U.S. sent 11 F-22 stealth fighters to Ovda Air Base in southern Israel. Additional refueling tankers, reconnaissance aircraft, and logistical support planes have been repositioned across Europe to sustain operations in the Middle East.
The Pentagon has strengthened defensive measures by deploying additional Patriot and THAAD missile defense systems to protect U.S. troops and facilities from potential Iranian missile retaliation. Approximately 30,000 to 40,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed in the region. Long-range bombers based in the United States have been placed on heightened alert, and aircraft have been deployed to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to support possible long-range strike operations.
The buildup has drawn political attention in Washington. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on President Trump to clarify his objectives following a classified briefing for congressional leaders. Lawmakers have expressed concern about the escalating situation and the need for transparency.
Overall, the expanded military presence signals a significant show of force intended to enhance deterrence and readiness, though questions remain about the administration’s ultimate strategic intentions.
